Paula Roe talks about her
debut book Forgotten Marriage (October '07)
How I came to
write Forgotten Marriage
The idea for Ally
and Finn's story started a long time ago, around 1992, when I started dating a
Danish guy. Eight years, one marriage and one divorce later, I started
thinking about happy endings, and how in life, there's no guarantees you'll
get one. And that made me angry... angry enough to write my story,
thinly veiled as Ally and Finn's.
Of course,
there's only so much of yourself you can put into a story without it getting
petty, boring or irrational (as real life can sometimes be!). A lot of
the emotions and feelings in the story are real, but the twists and turns, the
will and the amnesia is not. I also initially had Ally and Finn's names as
Cassie and Ricco, with Ricco as an Italian. Then I thought, what the
hey, I've never read about a Danish hero before. So when I changed him to
Finn, it all seemed to click - especially since I could use all those Danish
phrases and endearments I'd learnt!
Being a Sydney
gal from way back, I loved setting the story in Coogee and The Rocks - you'll
definitely be able to spot some familiar landmarks, including the wonderful
Rocks Markets.
I hope you enjoy
reading Forgotten Marriage - I'm thrilled to finally see "The Book of My
Heart" in print.
